The Vampire's Last Dance by Deanna Chase

 
Generally, I like reading paranormal romances as low key, fun reads, which is one of the reasons why I decided to listen to the unabridged audio version of The Vampire's Last Dance by Deanna Chase and well narrated by Traci Odom. I also chose this novel because it's narrated by Traci Odom and I like listening to books she narrates. It's also a very short read and I wanted to give another novel written by Deanna Chase a try.

Traci Odom's narration is probably the best thing I can say about my experience with The Vampire's Last Dance by Deanna Chase. I didn't care for the writing/storyline/plot development for The Vampire's Last Dance... It's was not very interesting or engaging. I didn't like the characters very much either. With that said, I think I will ditch out on reading any other novelss written by Deanna Chase in the future.

Controlled Chaos (Love and Lyrics #1) by Nikki Ash

 

I listened to the unabridged audio version of Controlled Chaos (Love and Lyrics #1) by Nikki Ash, which was well narrated by Walker Williams and Marina Barrett. This was my first read for November 2024!

After listening to nine audiobooks in October, I decided to make my first read for November an easy peasy, quick read! Controlled Chaos (Love and Lyrics #1) by Nikki Ash is a contemporary romance novel and fit perfectly for my need for a quick read and change of pace from what I'd read the previous month.

Although, I enjoyed Controlled Chaos (Love and Lyrics #1) by Nikki Ash with its dual narrators, I found it to be a typical, formulaic, romance read... That doesn't mean it wasn't a good read, it just means that it follows the standard romance formula that's so pervasive. Plus, too fairytale-lish in many respects to make it a perfect read.

I enjoyed the storyline and characters overall for Controlled Chaos (Love and Lyrics #1) by Nikki Ash and the narrators were good. Camden and Layla have been best friends since sophomore year of high school. Camden has always been in love with Layla since day one, but there's always been something that prevented Camden from making his feels for Layla known. Layla got engaged and married to a creep, while Camden and his music band became big. Camden and Layla reunited and eventually started a romance after Layla left her abusive husband... There's tons of drama surrounding that relationship.

Quintessentially: The One by Aleatha Romig

 

Aleatha Romig is a new to me author this year. I took a chance on listening to her novel, Quintessentially: The One, based on the plot summary earlier this summer. I was in the mood for a fun, light, romance read this summer and Quintessentially: The One fit the bill perfectly.

I enjoyed the storyline, characters, and writing for Quintessentially: The One by Aleatha Romig very much. I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed listening to this contemporary romance novel.

Funny Bunnies by Ann Omasta

While I was on vacation the week of April 16th, I listened to the unabridged audio version of Funny Bunnies by Ann Omasta for free via Ann Omasta's YouTube Channel. Click on the above link to listen to the above novella for free as well.

Funny Bunnies is the third installment of 'The Pet Set' series and is a contemporary romance novella. Listening time is approximately an hour and 12 minutes.

I've read a couple of other things written by Ann Omasta before with mixed feelings. I think that Funny Bunnies may be my last read by her. Funny Bunnies is narrated well enough, but the storyline was not that exciting, nor engaging enough to captivate me. In fact, the storyline was rather boring and too simplistic. The dialogue and interactions between characters was dull as well.

Love in the Light (Hearts in Darkness #2) by Laura Kaye

 

I enjoyed reading the Love in the Light (Hearts in Darkness #2) by Laura Kaye, which is the follow-up to Laura Kaye's Hearts in Darkness (Hearts in Darkness Duet Book 1). 

I am a sucker for well written contemporary romance and erotica reads and the 'Hearts in Darkness' duology is a winner. I read the first ebook in the series last month and was eager to read the follow up ebook, Love in the Light (Hearts in Darkness #2) by Laura Kaye, this month.

Love in the Light (Hearts in Darkness #2) by Laura Kaye delves into the newly blossomed romance between Makenna and Caden that began in the previous ebook. Their romance skyrockets quickly and soon Makenna brings Caden home to meet her family over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. 

A couple of small bumps over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend become a huge problem for Caden that leave him feeling unworthy of Makenna's love and has his PTSD flaring up big time to the point that his mental and physical health begin to spin out of control. Caden steps back from the relationship without discussing what's going on in any major detail, which leaves Makenna heartbroken and desperate to fix the situation. 

Will Caden and Makenna's young romance survive? Reading their trials and tribulations makes one wonder if it will.

 Overall, I enjoyed reading Love in the Light (Hearts in Darkness #2) by Laura Kaye. It isn't a perfect read by any means, but a fun and engaging read... An easy, breezy escape for the perfect getaway from reality.

Hearts in Darkness (Hearts in Darkness Duet Book 1) by Laura Kaye

Hearts in Darkness (Hearts in Darkness Duet Book 1) by Laura Kaye has been on my reading wishlist for quite a while now. I've heard wonderful things about this novella and its follow up book. So, earlier this month when I found myself in the mood for a short, fun contemporary romance read, Hearts In Darkness fit the bill.

I enjoyed reading the ebook edition of Hearts in Darkness (Hearts in Darkness Duet Book 1) by Laura Kaye very much. In the story for Hearts In Darkness, we find the two main characters, Makenna and Caden, coming into contact with each other for the very first time as Makenna enters an elevator. Before they each have the chance to get a closer look at one another, Makenna and Caden find themselves trapped inside a dark elevator for several hours... Hence, the start of a romantic relationship that most likely would have never happened otherwise!

During the several hours Makenna & Caden are trapped inside the pitch black elevator, we learn more about them through the conversations they have to pass the time waiting to be rescued. What else are two strangers going to do with their time stuck together? We learn a lot about them, including the usual things like each other's name, what they do for a living, etc. But something about being trapped in the dark, inside an enclosed space with a total stranger, breaks down major barriers between Makenna and Caden. They let their guard down and start sharing more and more personal details about themselves that they otherwise probably wouldn't be doing with someone they just met... Mostly likely, they wouldn't have given each other the time of day if they had seen each other before the elevator went pitch black and moved about their daily lives instead.

Long story, Makenna and Caden fall for each other romantically during their time tapped in the elevator. But what will happen when the lights come back on? Will they still feel that same attraction for each other? The answer is yes! But honestly, I liked the interaction between them best during their time spent in the elevator verses their time spent together afterward.

Overall, I liked the plot, characters, and story for Hearts in Darkness (Hearts in Darkness Duet Book 1) by Laura Kaye. Some of the dialogue and plot details didn't ring true, but these factors were only a minor detractor for me.

I enjoyed listening to The Five Year Hitch by Melissa de la Cruz. It's like listening to a radio talk show where a couple discusses their love life from it's inception to current state. The couple is Sam & Miles and they have know each other for most of their lives. They are in love... However every five years something happens that causes them to break up and move on to greener pastures before reuniting once again... Hence, the five year hitch. 

The Five Year Hitch by Melissa de la Cruz is a cute, engaging story. I enjoyed learning about Sam and Miles and their love life. The narration was also good.

I decided to squeeze in a couple of romance reads during the month of February in honor of Valentine's Day. I chose to read the ebook edition of Stop the Wedding! by Stephanie Bond, which is billed as a romantic comedy and is roughly 179 pages in length.

The storyline, characters, and writing for Stop the Wedding! by Stephanie Bond were good overall, which is the main reason/draw for why I chose to read this short romance novel. 

However, the BIGGEST issue I have for Stop the Wedding! by Stephanie Bond (and other romance novels like it), is the predictable, formulaic storyline for this genre and all the drama and misunderstandings that occur between the main characters before they finally find their everlasting love/happy ending. 

Part of me definitely loves romance novels and happily ever after endings in novels... it's just the predictable, formulaic storyline and all that goes with it that I have an issue with for so many romance novels. Additionally, I wouldn't classify Stop the Wedding! by Stephanie Bond as a romantic comedy... romance novel, yes, comedy, no!!

I live in San Francisco's East Bay, so reading books set in San Francisco can be a delight! Additionally, I like contemporary romance novellas with happy endings set around the Christmas and/or New Year holidays. 

So with this in mind, I found myself drawn to the ebook edition of San Francisco Serenade by Ginger Voight as it has the criteria I listed above.

Initially, the start of San Francisco Serenade had me wondering if I was actually going to enjoy this novella at all. But once it hit its stride, I found myself laughing in parts and smiling in others. Overall, I loved this holiday themed, contemporary romance novella set in San Francisco with a predictable happy ending. The characters are fun and well developed. I enjoyed the storyline. The writing is pretty good; although some minor editing work is needed. This novella is a holiday hit with me!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the unabridged audio version of Watching Willow (Gold Coast Retrievers #7) by Ann Omasta and narrated by Sarah L. Colton. This is a sweet, contemporary romance novel. The writing is good. I enjoyed the characters and the low drama storyline. If you want a fun, feel good novel with a happy ending, then this is the novel for you.

I also thought that Sarah L. Colton was a good narrator for Watching Willow. 

Additionally, I have not read any of the other novels in the 'Gold Coast Retrievers' series by Ann Omasta, but felt that I didn't need to have read the previous novels to read/follow the plot for Watching Willow.

Head Over Heels by Evie Snow is a contemporary romantic comedy novella approximately 67 pages in length. Head Over Heels is the first thing I've read by Evie Snow, which I discovered is a husband/wife writing duo! According to the author's website, it sounds like the wife half of this writing duo does all the actual writing and the husband half of this writing duo helps with 'plot wrangling'. So, with that said, I'm counting this book as solely written by a woman, even if her husband helps out with 'plot wrangling'.

Head Over Heels by Evie Snow is a cutesy, contemporary rom-com read. It was funny in parts and annoying in other parts. It has an interesting premise for a storyline, but essentially it is a predictable read. It was a low stress novella to read in an afternoon of down time for me.

Harlow & Max by J. H. Croix was billed as a holiday romance, but I do not recall anything 'holiday' related in this romance short story. It was all about two people that meet at a mutual friend's wedding and hook up in the end. The writing wasn't that superb, nor were the storyline and characters. The cliffhanger ending wasn't that thrilling either.

Between Then and Now by Zoe York

Between Then and Now by Zoe York is a short, contemporary romance read and is approximately 66 pages in length. I was able to download the ebook edition to my Kindle for FREE from Amazon! Below is my honest, unbiased opinion of Between Then and Now by Zoe York.

Between Then and Now by Zoe York is the first read in 'The Wardham Series'. It's a very quick contemporary romance read with decent characters, plot, and pacing throughout the entire story. I enjoyed the writing and storyline, but felt like this was your average romance read. I doubt I will be reading the rest of 'The Wardham Series', since I wasn't overly wowed by Between Then and Now.
