Quitters, Inc. by Stephen King

Quitters, Inc. by Stephen King had been on my radar for quite a while. I wanted to read this horror, short story ever since first learning about it. 

This month, I listened to the unabridged audio version of Quitters, Inc. via Hoopla. in one sitting as Quitters, Inc. is only 43 minutes in length. 

Quitters, Inc. is narrated by actor, Eric Roberts. I was expecting to be blown away by Eric Roberts's narration of Quitters, Inc., but I wasn't. His performance was very average.

I enjoyed Quitters, Inc. by Stephen King overall. For a short story, Quitters, Inc. is pretty well developed. Loved the ending!

The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes

 

I listened to the unabridged version of The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes, which is nicely narrated by Anne Hancock.

The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes is a short story and a work of historical fiction set in London, England. 

Marie Belloc Lowndes is a new to me author. I was drawn to The Lodger, because it is about Jack the Ripper. I am fascinated by Jack the Ripper's true identity. Who really was Jack the Ripper? Marie Belloc Lowndes gives us a fictional look at who he might have been.

The Star by H. G. Wells is a science fiction, short story roughly 34 minutes in length. I enjoyed the narration for this short as well as the storyline and writing overall. Essentially, the plot involves a star that passes by Earth and causes catastrophic climate disruptions.

I stumbled upon the audio version of The Treasure in the Forest by H. G. Wells on YouTube. So, I decided to listen to this short story after listening to the previous H. G. Wells short story last week.

I enjoyed listening to The Treasure in the Forest by H. G. Wells. It's a short, fun listen and also well narrated. It's a combination horror/adventure read, imo. Since this is a short story, I will resist giving a summary, so that I don't spoil the plot.

I absolutely love orchids! So, when I stumbled upon the audio version of The Strange Orchid by H. G. Wells on YouTube, I happily decided to listen to this short story... After all, how could I resist listening to a short story about an orchid?!

I enjoyed listening to The Strange Orchid by H. G. Wells. It's a short, fun listen and also well narrated. It's a combination horror/science fiction read, imo. Since this is a short story, I will resist giving a summary so I don't spoil the plot.

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

 

Okay, so this is my second time around listening to The Lottery by Shirley Jackson as I listened to a collection of short stories written by Shirley Jackson back in early 2021 and it was one of the best stories in the entire collection.

The Lottery is definitely worth the listen. I can fully understand why it won the O. Henry Prize Stories award in 1949. In fact, The Lottery was written in 1948 and was first published in The New Yorker magazine. The Lottery caused a very negative response from readers and some people even cancelled their subscriptions to The New Yorker due to Jackson's short story! Hate mail was even sent throughout the summer in which this short story was published. (Wikipedia is the source of most of the above bit of information I learned about The Lottery.)

If you haven't read, nor know the plot summary for The Lottery, then I'd rather not spoil it for you! Just go ahead and read/listen to it for yourself. It makes for great reading if you like short stories.

The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell

If memory serves me correctly, I first read The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell in middle school for an English class as a required reading assignment. I enjoyed reading this classic, short story at the time, but had forgotten the ending of this story all these decades later. 

So, I was thrilled to stumble upon the free audio version of The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell on YouTube last week. I promptly listened to it and enjoyed the storyline and ending once again! The Most Dangerous Game has a captivating storyline and I can understand why it was given the O. Henry Award.

If you enjoy classic, suspense/action adventure type of stories, then The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell is most definitely the read for you!

The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is a very short story I read years ago for either a high school English class or college English class. I enjoyed reading it back then and am happy that I recently rediscovered The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin again last month.

It's roughly 6.5 minutes in length, so if you're up to listening to a short story originally published in Vogue magazine in 1894, check it out as it is a lovely period piece that is well worth a listen.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

 I've read The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman twice in college in the 1990s for two different English classes. I enjoyed reading this story back then very much. 

Honestly, I hadn't thought about The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in years until a booktuber I follow on YouTube had uploaded a review of it on his YouTube Channel last month. It was then I decided to reread The Yellow Wallpaper.

Lucky me, I was able to find and listen to the unabridged audio version of The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman on YouTube for FREE. I find YouTube to be a wonderful resource for free unabridged audiobooks, especially the classics. (However, plenty of more contemporary works may be found as audiobooks for free on YouTube as well.)

I enjoyed rediscovering The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman! The Yellow Wallpaper is a classic, feminist, 'semi autobiographical' short story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in 1890 and eventually published in the January issue of The New England Magazine in 1892.

The gist of this short story is a young woman who is a wife and new mother is suffering from postpartum depression shortly after giving birth. Her husband is a doctor and he prescribes complete bed rest in the country where she will overcome the issue according to her husband. The husband claims to know what is best for his wife as he is a doctor after all... Let's just say this theory blows up in his face.

The idea that women were treated the way they were in the late 1800s by the medical professionals is appalling. Women's health was not taken seriously by medical professionals and this short story exemplifies this... Reading The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is almost like reading a horror story of sorts.

The Missing Actress Sensation by Ernest Bramah

 

Last year, I discovered that there are plenty of free, full-length audiobooks available on YouTube to listen to and not all of them are classics. I actually listened to quite a few audiobooks on YouTube last year and enjoyed my listening experience very much.

This month, I actually enjoyed listening to The Missing Actress Sensation by Ernest Bramah and narrated by Simon Stanhope from Bitesized Audio Classics.

The Missing Actress Sensation by Ernest Bramah is a mystery, short story from the Max Carrados series. I enjoyed this short story very much as I enjoy mysteries. 

Simon Stanhope is a good narrator and his YouTube channel, Bitesized Audio Classics, focuses on short stories from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. If these kinds of short stories are your thing, then checkout the Bitesized Audio Classics YouTube Channel.

Alpha Charming by Luna Fabray

 

I enjoy reading books, novellas, and short stories from the paranormal romance genre on occasion. I recently decided to read the ebook edition of Alpha Charming by Luna Fabray, which is a paranormal romance short story and the first ebook in the 'Lavender Cove Shifters' series. 

Luna Fabray is also a new to me author. So reading a short story by a new to me author is a great way for me to discover new authors. If I like the new author, then I can always read longer works by them in the future... that's if they write anything longer than short stories.

Anyway, I was able to download Alpha Charming by Luna Fabray for FREE from Amazon. Below is my honest, unbiased opinion of Alpha Charming by Luna Fabray.

Alpha Charming by Luna Fabray has an interesting premise for a story, but unfortunately, I didn't feel the author was able to fully develop the storyline and characters to make them interesting enough for my taste. Plus, the cliffhanger ending wasn't something I liked either... I don't want to buy the next installment of the series to see how things turn out. Cliffhanger endings are one of my reading pet peeve.

At approximately 52 minutes in length, I thought Stay Tuned (Unsettling #3) by Jeffrey Deaver was an engaging work of short fiction that was well narrated and fun to listen to. I enjoyed the storyline, characters, and twist to this tale.

The Myth of the Self-Made Man by Rubén Reyes is a short story I listened to in audio format, which I downloaded for FREE from Audible and is approximately 51 minutes in length.

I enjoyed listening to The Myth of the Self-Made Man by Rubén Reyes. This short story is well narrated by Inés del Castillo, Eric Yves Garcia, and Christian Barillas. I liked that The Myth of the Self-Made Man combines the genres of science fiction with some elements of mystery. I also found The Myth of the Self-Made Man to be a fascinating read as I wanted to know the truth about Felipe's life and the other cyborgs.

Yes, to finally reading something written by T. C. Boyle!! He's been on my radar for more than a decade now

I listened to the unabridged audio version of La Conchita by T. C. Boyle from Audible, which was narrated by the author. Listening time for La Conchita by T. C. Boyle is 29 minutes.

La Conchita by T. C. Boyle is a short story set along the central coast of California between the cities of Ventura and Carpinteria in the hamlet of La Conchita, California.

For sixteen years, my husband and I lived in Carpinteria, California. The community of La Conchita is nestled between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean just a few minutes south of Carpinteria as you drive along the 101 Freeway southward towards Ventura.

Because I am familiar with La Conchita and the mudslide that hit this small community, I couldn't resist hearing T. C. Boyle read his short story, La Conchita. It's a fun, suspenseful and engaging short story and I am glad I listened to it.

Ugh, Written In Tandem by Andie Madison, wasn't for me. I felt like too much of the focus of this short read was all about how much disdain the two leading characters have for each other!! I will not be reading any further books in the 'Murder, We Wrote' series.

I am not usually into zombie apocalypse short stories. BUT I decided to go ahead and read Dawn Patrol: (Undead Ultra Prequel) by Camille Picott, which is a zombie apocalypse short story approximately 56 pages in length.

I was pleasantly surprised by Dawn Patrol: (Undead Ultra Prequel) by Camille Picott! The writing is good. The storyline is good. I also liked the characters as well. Overall I had a good experience reading Dawn Patrol: (Undead Ultra Prequel) by Camille Picott. I'm not sure I'll read the rest of the series, but I would recommend this short story.

Below is my honest, unbiased review of The Lola Cruz Christmas Story by Melissa Bourbon Ramirez.

This is the first time I've read anything by author, Melissa Bourbon Ramirez. Her writing is engaging, funny, and good. I was impressed with this short story until its ending, which ended very abruptly in my opinion! The ending wasn't so much a cliffhanger ending... The ending just left many unanswered questions that could have been resolved/wrapped up by adding a few more details about the characters and the situation that lead up to the event that happened in The Lola Cruz Christmas Story.

Despite the abrupt ending to The Lola Cruz Christmas Story, I'd be willing to give Melissa Bourbon Ramirez another chance by reading one of her full length novels in the future as I thought her writing overall was good... It's just a matter of finding the time to do so with all of my other books to read!
