I stumbled upon a post which I found on Wired Science titled The Classic, Beautiful and Controversial Books That Changed Science Forever by Tanya Lewis. It's amazing that works like On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin and Gray’s Anatomy by Henry Gray were controversial during their day, but are taken for granted today as the foundation of natural science.
