The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey

I finished reading the paperback edition of The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey last night and it marks the fourth book I've read for 2017. 

The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey is a short work of nonfiction, which I've been wanting to read for quite awhile now. It has a catchy title and after reading what it was about, I knew I had to read it. I received the paperback edition of The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating for Christmas in 2016 from my husband, so I decided to read this book right away.

WOW, Wow, wow, The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey is an awesome book to read!! I was really blown away with how much I enjoyed reading this book. Seriously, who'd ever think reading about snails would be so interesting, unless, of course, you're a malacologist (one who studies mollusks)?!?! The author, Elisabeth Tova Bailey, makes reading about snails interesting for the lay person, by writing about the topic of snails in a unique and engaging way. 

Essentially, Elizabeth Tova Bailey comes down with a mysterious virus she contracts while visiting Europe that leaves her weak and virtually bedridden for many years. When a friend brings the author a pot of violets that includes a live snail, Ms. Bailey soon finds endless fascination in watching the snail live its life. Over time, the author, Elisabeth Tova Bailey, wants to learn more about the lives of snails and begins researching snails. 

During the course of reading The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating, I read about not only the author's life, but also about her curiosity and fascination with the snail she had been given, as well as information about snails in general. Eventually, Elisabeth Tova Bailey begins to recover and she returns the snail to the wild. 

The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey provides a wonderful balance of sharing information about the author's life and the lives of snails in general. Everything in The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey is presented in fascinating bite sized, informative chunks. This book isn't a dry, boring academic read, but a charming book that shares nature to the masses in a way that everyone is able to enjoy.

I can fully understand why The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey has won the following book awards:

*Starred Review* At age 34, Bailey was stricken with a mysterious virus while on a trip to Europe. Her healthy life had been full of activity, and now just the thought of getting up to get something was exhaustive. When a friend found some violets and brought her one in a pot, she also added a live snail below the violet’s leaves. Bailey wondered why she needed a snail, but after square holes began to appear in a letter propped on the violet’s pot, it occurred to Bailey that the snail needed food. She put a withered flower in the saucer below, and when the snail began to eat, Bailey realized that she could hear it eating—it was the sound of someone very small munching on celery. Soon the author realized she was attached, the snail providing an oasis of calm for her frantic and frustrated thoughts. She worried that the snail’s world was too artificial, so her caregiver created a woodland terrarium. Not only did the snail have a new home but Bailey had a new game: hide-and-seek with a snail. 1. Power of the Habit by Charles Duhigg ~ This is a very engaging read filled with tons of knowledge about the power of habits.

2. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo ~ Need to rid your life of clutter?? This book has some really good tips on how to dispose of your clutter for good and organize your life to become clutter free.

3. Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress Free Productivity by David Allen ~ Getting things done in a stress free manner is the theme of this book.

4. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert ~ This book is pure magic. It's well written and engaging. I liked it so much more than I thought I would.

5. Mind Over Medicine by Lissa Rankin MD ~ Loved the outlook on medicine by a medical doctor.

6. The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey ~ During a time of illness, the author discovers the life of a wild snail and writes about it. Who knew that the lives of snails could be so interesting? Another book I enjoyed so much more than I though I would.

7. This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor by Susan Wicklund ~ Abortion is such a controversial topic. It was interesting to read about this topic from the view point of a doctor who had performed abortions for much of her career.

8. My Life On The Road by Gloria Steinem ~ I've admired Gloria Steinem for years. I loved her memoir, My Life On The Road. What an interesting life Gloria Steinem has lived so far.

9. Stoned: Jewelry, Obsession, and How Desire Shapes the World by Aja Raden ~ I love jewelry and this nonfiction read discusses how jewelry has shaped history. It's a very entertaining historical journey that takes the reader around the world.

10. The Assassination of the Archduke by Greg King & Sue Woolmans ~ This well written book is FABULOUS!! It's packed with so much history and information that my mind is still spinning... The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sets off World War I. This book touches upon royal history, the lives of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife + their children. Along with a lot of history before and after Franz Ferdinand's assassination.

11. The Soloist by Steve Lopez ~ Another wonderful book! Not only is The Soloist a story about a lost dream, an unlikely friendship, and the redemptive power of music, it also sheds light on mental illness, homelessness on LA's Skid Row and the struggles that go along with it in ways I could have never envisioned before my encounter with The Soloist.

12. The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester ~ The history of the Oxford English Dictionary is fascinating. I really enjoyed this book immensely.

I was blown away by just how much I enjoyed reading this book. The writing is exquisite. The author, Elisabeth Tova Bailey, came down with a mysterious virus, which leaves her weak and virtually bedridden for many years. During this time she begins studying mollusks after watching a live snail on a plant she'd been given as a gift. 

2. 8 Hacks For Spending Less While Reading More

I was familiar with 7 of the 8 hacks for spending less while reading more!! But am always on the look out for how to spend less on reading whenever possible.

3. Tender Wings of Desire by Colonel Sanders

I couldn't believe that Kentucky Friend Chicken actually came out with a romance novella featuring Colonel Harland Sanders as a character... I figured this novella would be super cheesy! Seriously, have you seen the book cover?? The book cover is super cheesy looking... However, Tender Wings of Desire by Colonel Sanders was FREE and a short read, so figured what did I have to lose? I could always stop reading this novella if it wasn't very good. Surprisingly though, Tender Wings of Desire by Colonel Sanders was actually decent.

4. Recipe for Murder: Frightfully Good Food Inspired by Fiction by Estérelle Payany

I love the layout and how the information is presented in Recipe for Murder: Frightfully Good Food Inspired by Fiction by Estérelle Payany! A page or two is devoted to the villain, then a short excerpt from where the villain is found in literature is presented, which is then followed by a recipe that would be perfect for the the said villain. Plus, the amazing vintage artwork/graphics by Jean-Francois Martin are sprinkled throughout this book as well. I loved the author's sense of humor too in Recipe for Murder: Frightfully Good Food Inspired by Fiction by Estérelle Payany.

5. Alana Dakos --- Knitter, Knit Designer, Author, Business Owner, Knitting Instructor, & More!

I am a knitter. So, in 2017, I was thrilled to learn that Alana Dakos would be at a local independent yarn store. I was thrilled to meet her in person and have her sign two copies of knitting books she had written!

6. English novelist Kazuo Ishiguro wins the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature!

Every October, I am on pins and needles waiting to learn who will win the Nobel Prize for Literature... And it's so difficult to know who's going to actually win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Sometimes the Nobel Prize for Literature goes to an author I've heard of before and other times I've never heard of the author before ever... So the news as to the winner's identity of the Nobel Prize in Literature always makes for interesting reading to say the least.

7. Joyce Maynard ~ Author Speaking Event!!

It's so cool that our local, public library has hosted several author events. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend one of these events and meet Joyce Maynard in person. Fun event for sure!!

8. Lisa See ~ Author Signing Event!!

It was so much fun hearing Lisa See speak about her novel, The Tea Girl on Hummingbird Lane, and obtain a signed copy before leaving!!

9. Several Ways Readers Can Support The Women's Movement On 'A Day Without A Woman'

10. The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel

I received an advance reader's edition of this novel and loved it!! Amy Engel has become a new favorite writer.

Bout of Books 18 ~~ Day 6 Update

Today, I continued reading more of The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. I am not sure how much time I spent reading today. However, I read a total of 66 pages today and ultimately finished reading The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. It was an excellent nonfiction book, which I'll review soon.

2017 First Quarter Wrap Up Post!!

I can't believe the first quarter of 2017 has come to a close already!! Seriously, where does the time go?! I know, I know, I practically say this every quarter, but it is true... Time seems to fly by.

I've had a really great quarter in terms of reading! I've read a total of 52 books so far this year, which essentially means that I am averaging 17.33 books a month!! This is pretty awesome as I have not read this many books in such a short amount time before that I know of anyway.

So far this year, I've only given 3 books a rating of 5 stars out of 5 stars. So, my top three reads are as follows:

The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey
The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel
Kentucky on the Rocks by Gwendolyn Grace

I've also given a lot of other books a 4 to 4.5 star ratings this year as well as come across some disappointing reads along the way too! But I will choose to only highlight my top rated reads at this time.

As usual, I read books in all formats from hardbacks and paperbacks to ebooks and audiobooks! I've also read books from quite a few genres, including nonfiction books, cozy mystery novels, romance novels, paranormal, young adult, a graphic novel, horror, and even erotica books too to name a few of the genres. 

Essentially, my tastes in what I read varies widely, as I like to not only read books from familiar authors and genres, but also explore new to me authors as well.

I've also had fun swapping books at four different (new to me) Little Free Libraries in my local area, which is always a fun activity to participate in as I like visiting Little Free Libraries.

I also enjoyed hearing author, Lisa See, speak at an author event earlier this month. This is the first author event I've attended this year. I love attending author events and meeting/hearing authors speak about their books and their writing. Plus, having them sign copies of their book(s) is also a perk as well! I am hoping to attend more author events later in the year.

So, that pretty much wraps up my first quarter in 2017. How has your first quarter of 2017 gone in terms of reading? What have been your best or worst reads so far this year? Have you attended any author events or book festivals this year?

Bout of Books 18 --- Update 1

Yes, I'm having fun participating in Bout of books 18! What a great way to start the New Year by participating in a low key read-a-thon.

Yesterday, I finally narrowed down my reading goals for Bout of Books 18 as follows:

2. The Defector by Daniel Silva (Abridged Audiobook)
3. The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey (Paperback Book)
4. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill by Mark Bittner (Hardback Book I started in 2016 and would like to finish)
Finished on 1/3/2017

I may add more books to the mix depending whether or not I finish the above four books this week.

Today, I spent my time listening to The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly. I listened to 80% of The Brass Verdict, which equates to about 4 hours, 45 minutes of listening.

I also participated in today's a read-a-thon challenge of describing myself in six words as follows: Fun loving, avid reader and knitter!

Here's What to Read When You've Been Diagnosed A Mental Or Chronic Illness

Being diagnosed with a mental or chronic illness can be scary and daunting! I came across an interesting article on Bustle's website (I love their website for bookish related news) titled, 15 Books To Read When You've Been Diagnosed With Mental Or Chronic Illness by Kristian Wilson. In the article, Kristian Wilson wrote the following:

The period immediately following your diagnosis with a lifelong condition manifests as a whirlwind of emotions that can be difficult to navigate for even the most-well-supported individuals. To help you through this trying time, I've got 15 books to read when you've been diagnosed with a mental or chronic illness.

In February 2009, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder, Behçet's disease, one of those illnesses that you have to explain to most people you meet, because they've never heard of what you've got. Later that year, my doctor diagnosed me with anxiety, depression, and IBS. I sank into a very dark place as it dawned on me that I would be taking multiple medications for the rest of my life — no small ordeal when you're a 19-year-old college student.

I wish I had had these books when I was first diagnosed with Behçet's. They're just the kind of thing I needed to recognize that my response to the news was nothing to be ashamed of. Bout of Books 18 ~~ Day 5 Update + Read-A-Thon Challenge

Today, I continued reading more of The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. I read 77 pages today.

If you like historical fiction set in ancient Rome, then try reading I Am Livia by Phyllis T. Smith. It's an awesome read!

If you like listening to historical fiction novels, then try listening to Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim and narrated by Bahni Turpin. I loved this novel and gave it a 5 star rating last year.

If you like sushi and are a foodie, then try reading The Story of Sushi by Trevor Corson.

If you like reading young adult trilogies, then I highly recommend reading the 'His Fair Assassin' Trilogy by Robin LaFevers. I loved reading Grave Mercy, Dark Triumph, and Mortal Heart.

If you like nonfiction books about encounters with wildlife, specifically whales, then try reading Grayson by Lynne Cox.

If you like books with a dog as the main character, then try reading The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. The Art of Racing in the Rain is told from the perspective of a dog named Enzo. It is a must read for all dog lovers.

If you like reading celebrity memoirs, then try reading Bryan Cranston's A Life In Parts. I was surprised at how much I liked his memoir.

I've enjoyed seeing and hearing author, Lisa See, speak at a local independent book. 

Plus, I also attended the 2017 Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley, California for the 3rd year in a row and had a blast. I attended three of the author speaking events and had five of my books sign by the author! Seeing and meeting Roxane Gay, Cornelia Funke, Aya de Leon, and Cathryn Jakobson Ramin at the Bay Area Book Festival was awesome.

Bout of Books 18 ~~ Update 4

Today I finished listening to The Defector by Daniel Silva and narrated by Phil Gigante. I wasn't impressed with this audiobook and am very glad that I am finished with it. Now I can focus on my last read for this read-a-thon, which is The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey.
