Do You Miss Reading in Public?

Some times I do miss reading in public. I use to read books at coffeehouses or cafes, at the beach or parks, on planes and trains, etc. But now it seems like forever since I've read a book outside my home.

If you miss reading in public, then here's some good news! I recently read an Electric Lit article titled, Miss Reading in Public? Bring the Sounds of the Library to Your Home. In the article, I learned that "the New York Public Library has compiled an album of noises we miss—including the sound of the library itself." Click on the link above to read the full story and listen to a sample of NYPL album from Spotify.

  1. No, I don't miss reading in public. Too many distractions there.

    2. I agree with Dorothy. I can read anywhere but sometimes people think I only read because I don't have anyone to talk to and want to fill the void. ;)

    3. The only time I bug someone reading in public, is if they are reading a book I loved reading or are reading a book I want to read... I then end up wanting to talk with them about the book a little bit.

    4. Oh, I don't mind being bugged by another reader, especially if they have read the same book. But not about someone else's ailments if I could read. ;)

    5. Ugh, hearing about the ailments/woes from a total stranger is the worst!! I use to take the Amtrak train to visit my parents. I'd bring a book with me to read during the 5 hour train trip. The train would usually fill up and I'd sometimes end up sitting next to a blabber mouth that would share all of their woes with me.

    6. I can understand if someone thinks they have found someone who might understand them or they can while away the time with and sometimes I think, yes, that person needs my attention but often it's not that. And then I'm annoyed.

  2. I was just discussing this with my hubby. I had a really tough school year and I completely neglected my reading these past few months. I told my husband that on the first day of summer vacation that I am going to read. The best thing would be able to do this at a coffee shop. But I'll be patient for now. I'll be happy to just read on my couch.

    1. Coffee houses, parks, and the beach are my favorite places to read in public... But for now, I simply read at home.

    2. Same!
I also enjoyed going to the Cerritos Library to read. Have you been to that library? It's super fancy. I used to drive there to treat myself and enjoy the ambiance.

    3. No, I haven't been to the Cerritos Library. I will add it to my list of places to visit as I love visiting bookish related places when I can.
