Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke

 

Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke has been on my radar for awhile. I hadn't added this horror novella to my reading wishlist or anything and didn't have any plans to read actually.

However, I was looking for a quick read and had stumbled upon Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke while scrolling around on Hoopla. After reading the publisher's summary and discovering that the audio edition of Sour Candy was 2 hours, 36 minutes in length, I figured why not make this my next read? After all, Sour Candy sounded like an interesting read.

Well, Sour Candy is definitely an interesting read. It's a work of contemporary fiction with a focus on horror and suspense. The author is good at building suspense and creating a slow, but steady pace for this novella. I found myself hooked immediately while reading the first chapter and wanted to see where this book lead me.

For the full storyline, read the publisher's summary below. For me, Sour Candy is all about whether the main character, Phil Pendleton, is sane or mental ill. Did he really have an otherworldly/paranormal experience that lead to his demise or was he dealing with mental health issues? The ending makes it look like the events that occurred weren't all in Phil's head, but really did happen.

Circus of the Dead: Book 1 by Kimberly Loth

 

I recently listened to the unabridged audio version of Circus of the Dead: Book 1 by Kimberly Loth, which was well narrated by Sarah Puckett. 

Circus of the Dead is a young adult novel, which deals with the supernatural, horror, and fantasy genres all mixed together in one novel. I liked the concept for this novel, but it didn't play out very well... Or at least, as good as I hoped it would play out.

Callie, the main character, is a teenager sent by her mother to live with her Uncle Luke for the summer. Luke is Callie's mother's brother. Callie and Luke have never met before. In fact, Luke has no idea that Callie is coming all the way from California to the Louisiana Bayou to work at the circus. Things go wrong from the  very start of this novel and continue to go from bad to worse rather quickly. Callie is almost killed by a tiger when she is locked inside the tiger's cage. Then, Callie visits the fortune teller at the circus for a tarot reading. Callie draws two tarot cards that seal her fate. Callie's fate is that she will be stuck on the island where the circus is held, unable to escape forever, and that she'll fall in love. 

Throughout the remainder of the novel, Callie tries to escape the island numerous times without success. Callie is almost killed a few times... And Samuel, the mysterious ringmaster, has strange powers/control over the permanent residents of the island. Samuel isn't who he seems to be, yet Callie is attracted to him. Stranger still is the fact that Callie's parent's won't rescue her despite several pleas on Callie's part to come home. Nor do Callie's parents and her younger sister believe she is in any sort of danger.

Circus of the Dead: Book 1 by Kimberly Loth starts out pretty well and the ending is decent enough. However, the middle of the novel has a lot of action that doesn't move the storyline along substantially... Sure, we learn a little more about some of the other islanders and the circus itself. But, I felt like the plot didn't explain enough about the mysteries concerning the circus itself, or enough about Callies's Uncle Luke and her parents, or even much regarding the mysterious, Samuel, and his backstory. I will skip the rest of the 'Circus of the Dead' series.

A Stir of Echoes by Richard Matheson

 

I listened to the unabridged audio version of A Stir of Echoes by Richard Matheson and narrated by Scott Brick. 

Listening time for A Stir of Echoes by Richard Matheson is 6 hours, 44 minutes.

A Stir of Echoes is the 3rd book I've read written by Richard Matheson. I can officially say I am now a HUGE fan of Matheson's writing and look forward to reading more of his books in the future. A Stir of Echoes is very well narrated by Scott Brick.

What did I love about A Stir of Echoes? Just about everything! There were only a couple of minor issues, which didn't deter from my overall rating. 

Richard Matheson is a masterful writer. He really knows how to pace his novels and build intrigue and suspense. With each passing chapter, I found myself wanting to keep listening to see what transpire with the characters, the plot, and storyline. 

A Stir of Echoes was published in 1958 and is set in the 1950s in Hawthorne, California. The main characters are Tom and Ann Wallace. They are a young couple with a young son and Ann is pregnant with their second child. 

At the start of A Stir of Echoes, Ann's brother, Philip, is visiting Tom and Ann. Tom, Ann, and Philip go to a neighbor's dinner party early on in the novel. After dinner, Philip hypnotizes Tom as a party trick as a way to entertain the dinner guests. 

After everyone goes home for the night, Tom begins to experiences strange things throughout the rest of the novel... Like reoccurring ghost sightings of the same woman in their home, premonitions, nightmares, the ability to sense what other people are thinking and feeling, automatic writing, and so on.

Initially, both Tom and Ann don't understand what's going on with Tom since the hypnosis session. Ann is concerned and scared that Tom's losing his mind, which causes stress and tension in their marriage. 

As Tom and Ann both try and figure out what's going on with Tom and why he's experiencing what he is, there's also the mystery of the ghostly apparition that keeps reaching out to Tom and who she is. Come to find, the ghost is a woman who was murdered in the very home in which they live. Tom and Ann eventually figure out who the murdered woman was and who murdered her.

There's so much more to A Stir of Echoes. I simply gave broad brushstrokes to the storyline to prevent giving away too much of the plot twists and finer details for those that may want to read this novel for themselves.

Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix

 

A few of Grady Hendrix's novels have been on my radar for awhile now based on reviews I've read. However, it wasn't until July of 2023, that I actually chose to listen to my first Grady Hendrix novel. I decided to listen to the unabridged audio version of Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix based on the storyline, reviews and narrators, Bronson Pinchot and Tai Sammons.

I wasn't disappointed! Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix is a very fun, fast paced, and entertaining read. It offers a different take on horror and what it means to be inside a haunted house! I liked the 'Ikea like' themed setting in this novel too. The characters are well developed and relatable. The plot for the most part was excellent, except for a few uneven spots. Overall a great read. 

If you like audiobooks, then I recommend Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix in audio form.

I've read or listened to 2-3 of Jeffrey Deaver novels in the past. So when I came across a free download for Stay Tuned (Unsettling #3) by Jeffrey Deaver and narrated by Zoe Chao on Audible, I decided to give this short work of fiction a listen.

Below is my honest, unbiased review of Stay Tuned (Unsettling #3) by Jeffrey Deaver.

At approximately 52 minutes in length, I thought Stay Tuned (Unsettling #3) by Jeffrey Deaver was an engaging work of short fiction that was well narrated and fun to listen to. I enjoyed the storyline, characters, and twist to this tale.

The Avery Nolan Adventures by ML Hamilton

Always on the lookout for new to me authors, I decided to download the unabridged audio version of The Avery Nolan Adventures by ML Hamilton and narrated by Kelley Hazen, which is an omnibus containing all four novels in the Avery Nolan series.

Listening time for The Avery Nolan Adventures by ML Hamilton is 30 hours, 1 minute.

Kelley Hazen is a really good narrator. She made listening to Avery Nolan series worthwhile. I also enjoyed listening all four books in one collection verses having to my each novel separately!

Although I generally like paranormal romance novels, I thought The Avery Nolan Adventures by ML Hamilton was just okay overall. The writing is decent and so is the world building. However, I wasn't overly wowed by the Avery Nolan series. Many of the characters were fun to read about... Plus, the narration of this series made the Avery Nolan enjoyable.

I enjoyed reading Knead to Know by Liz Schulte quite a bit. The storyline, characters, and writing were well done. 

My only complaint is that Knead to Know by Liz Schulte seemed like it could potentially be a spin off from another series by the author. I say this only because it seems like there was a backstory as to why the main character, Maggie, was half vampire and other details that the reader might know more about that wasn't discussed in detail in Knead to Know.

Knead to Know by Liz Schulte is a standalone book, but it would have been nice to know more of Maggie's backstory... Like how she was turned into a half vampire, etc.

Ghost Coach by Amanda Linehan

Ghost Coach by Amanda Linehan is a paranormal short story and is 15 pages in length. I was able to download this short story for free from Amazon to my Kindle.

I read this short story last month. It sounded like a cute, fast, fun read... Plus, it had four, 5-star reviews on Amazon, so I decided to give it a go.

Well, I was disappointed by the end of Ghost Coach and was left wondering why it had four, 5-star reviews on Amazon. I loved the concept of this short story, but I thought it had been poorly executed. I found myself wanting to rewrite this short story and either make it more of a horror short story or a paranormal romance short story. 

Essentially, this story is about a ghost who isn't very scary. He's trying to scare Sarah, but isn't successful in scaring her at all. So why does this ghost want to scare someone so badly?? By scaring someone, the ghost will finally become visible, which he wants to have happen very badly. The ghost finally solicits Sarah for help. He wants her to teach him how to scare someone. She tries to help him out repeatedly without success. However, they do become friends over time. The ghost finally gives up and says he's going to cross over to the other side, but doesn't end up doing so... He returns to see Sarah and accidentally scares her in the process, which leads him into becoming visible. How Sarah ends up getting scared was odd. Plus, I thought once the ghost became visible, Sarah and the ghost would start a romance, but that didn't happen. Ghost Coach simply had a flat ending.

The Dead of Sanguine Night by Travis Simmons was a pretty good read, although it needed some minor editing. The first chapter was a bit slow to me, but the remaining chapters were fairly engaging and pretty fast paced. I liked the storyline for The Dead of Sanguine Night by Travis Simmons.

Let's just say that I was underwhelmed by this paranormal short story. It started out promising, but went downhill swiftly. 

I liked the premise of this short story. Supernatural Sleuth by Angela Wallace features a leading female character named Paige Benson, who is an investigating journalist. Paige sets out to discover why pets are going missing in a Seattle neighborhood... But when Paige sets out on her journey to discover why the pets go missing, things grow cheesy. Paige is kidnapped by a rogue vampire and has to escape through a sewer system where graphic, gross descriptions of the sewer system is off putting and disgusting... Like could we have skipped the overly graphic gross slime, smell, and ooze from a sewer system? Plus, the ending of this short story wasn't much of an ending. And, the reason for the missing pets wasn't that great or at least it wasn't for me.

Overall, I enjoyed reading The Spookshow by Tim McGregor. My only major complaint was the ending of this novel as it doesn't have what I would call an appropriate ending. Meaning that it contained the typical cliffhanger ending, which I do not enjoy at all in books.

The characters, story, and plot twists were all decent otherwise for The Spookshow by Tim McGregor. If you like paranormal books filled with supernatural events and ghosts, then you'll most likely enjoy reading this book.

Haunted by Ann-Marie King

I finished reading Haunted by Ann-Marie King, which is a paranormal novella.

Below is my honest, unbiased review of Haunted by Ann-Marie King.

I wasn't impressed with Haunted by Ann-Marie King once I'd finished reading it. It needs editing work for sure. Plus, I didn't like the cliffhanger ending... I've never been a fan of cliffhanger endings! 

I also felt that Haunted by Ann-Marie King was super slow paced and the author kept harping on the same themes of what was in Jayden's grandma's attic (which we never find out about), Jayden's amnesia, Jayden's need to get through high school to go to college, and so on. 

The characters weren't that great in Haunted by Ann-Marie King... I felt this novella had such potential to be a great read, but just fell short.

Fangs, Fur & Mistletoe (Mystic Isle, Book One) by Selena Blake is the 4th paranormal read I've read this year so far. 

I read the ebook edition of Fangs, Fur & Mistletoe (Mystic Isle, Book One) by Selena Blake. It's a paranormal erotica/romance novella approximately 96 pages in length. I was able to download this novella to my Kindle for FREE! Below is my unbiased review of Fangs, Fur & Mistletoe (Mystic Isle, Book One) by Selena Blake.

I'm usually not that into paranormal novels or novellas, but for some reason this year I have gravitated towards reading them more than the norm for me. I thought Fangs, Fur & Mistletoe (Mystic Isle, Book One) by Selena Blake was an okay read. I think paranormal novels are okay in general... I can take them or leave. My main criteria is that the paranormal novels/novellas must be well written and engaging reads for me to enjoy reading them. 

I wasn't into the 'instant love' between Coco and Grayson in Fangs, Fur & Mistletoe (Mystic Isle, Book One) by Selena Blake. Sure they'd fought on the battlefield a 100 years on opposing sides and had an instant attraction then, but that's all that happened between them -- attraction! They don't see each other again until they accidentally run into one other 100 years later at Mystic Isle. Coco and Grayson still have a strong attraction for one another. They delve in to their mutual attraction with heated sex scenes, but how can they really know they are in love when they've only had mind blowing sex? And the sex scenes weren't all that hot either. 

The story and characters weren't that intriguing either for Fangs, Fur & Mistletoe (Mystic Isle, Book One) by Selena Blake. I am not interested in reading the rest of the Mystic Isle series by Selena Blake.

She stepped into the sugar-soft sand and the chunky heels sank. Her arms flailed as her ankles twisted. Years of battle had taught her how to stay upright in the toughest conditions. Her lightning-fast reflexes kicked in and she righted herself before frowning down at the shoes. Bending at the waist, she unbuckled the straps and slipped her feet out. The hair on the back of her neck stood up as a shadow fell across the sand at her feet.

“For a minute there, I thought you didn’t remember me.” Without even looking at his face, she knew the deep masculine voice belonged to her wolf.
