SF In SF - Science Fiction in San Francisco. - The Perfect Fit!

As an avid book lover, there is always a plethora of literary events and author signings in and around the San Francisco Bay Area to attend, for which I am immensely grateful. I recently learned about SF In SF - Science Fiction. San Francisco. - The Perfect Fit through author, Meg Elison's Facebook page.

As a relevant side note here, I'd wanted to see/hear Meg Elison and a few other authors speak on day two of the 2018 Bay Area Book Festival. Unfortunately, I missed day two of the 2018 Bay Area Book Festival due to unforeseen circumstances. Fortunately, for me, Meg Elison is a resident of San Francisco's East Bay Area, so I was finally able to see/hear her speak last night at SF In SF along with authors, Terry Bisson, Ellen Klages, and Lucy Jane Bledsoe at the American Bookbinders Museum in downtown San Francisco.

About 20-25 attendees came to hear moderator Terry Bisson introduce each author and then hear Meg Elison, Ellen Kluges, and Lucy Jane Bledsoe each read a bit of their writing, discuss their work, and answer questions from the audience. Afterward, each author signed copies of their books. I came away with five signed copies of books to added to my ever growing signed book collection.

My husband and I had a blast attending our very first SF In SF event last night and I am not even a huge fan of the science fiction genre... Neither is my husband as he doesn't read many books, but he happily comes to these book events with me. We were very impressed with the SF in SF event and the venue where it was held! The staff was very friendly and so were those attending this event. My hubby and I were at the SF in SF event for approximately three hours. We arrived early and enjoyed walking through the American Bookbinders Museum before the evening's festivities began. The American Bookbinders Museum is small but fabulous museum! We look forward to returning for one of the in depth docent lead tours in the future. The best part was having front row seats and hearing the authors speak/read and having my books signed by the authors! The perfect date evening with my hubby. I'm feeling blessed!

I Attended the 2017 Bay Area Book Festival!!!

Me @ the Bay Area Book Festival
Lucky me, I attended the 3rd annual Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley, California!! The Bay Area Book Festival took place last weekend on Saturday, June 3rd and Sunday, June 4th.

This was my 3rd time attending the Bay Area Book Festival and I had a blast attending a few of the festivities with my husband... We only visited the Bay Area Book Festival on Saturday, June 3rd from 12pm to approximately 6:30pm.

During our time spent at the Bay Area Book Festival, my husband and I enjoyed visiting various book booths, hearing three different author speakers talk about their books and their writing, answer questions from the audience, discuss other topics, and of course, sign copies of their books.

Books I had signed by the author at the Bay Area Book Festival

I was able to have five books signed by authors who spoke at the Bay Area Book Festival this year to add to my ever growing collection of signed books!! I love meeting authors in person!

I was most excited about seeing and hearing, Roxane Gay, speak at the 2017 Bay Area Book Festival and having her sign copies of her books, Difficult Women and Bad Feminist. I am so glad that I was able to hear Roxane Gay speak at the 2017 Bay Area Book Festival this year. Roxane Gay is an amazing, thoughtful, and thought provoking speaker and I enjoyed hearing what she had to share with those who came to hear her speak. I'm looking forward to reading both of Roxane Gay's books that she signed for me!

I also enjoyed hearing author and illustrator, Cornelia Funke, speak at the Bay Area Book Festival and having her sign a copy of her novel, Lilly & Fin: A Mermaid's Tale for me!

Another amazing author speaking event that my husband and I had a chance to hear at the 2017 Bay Area Book Festival was a talk titled, 'When the Back Breaks: An Investigative Reporter Reveals All on the Back Pain Industry'. I enjoyed hearing investigative reporter Cathryn Jakobson Ramin talk about the back industry, hear her story dealing with back pain, and having Cathryn Jakobson Ramin a sign copy of her new nonfiction book, Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery, for me.

Me and Cathryn Jakobson Ramin
I was also thrilled to have author Aya de Leon sign one of her books, Upton Thief, for me at the 2017 Bay Area Book Festival.

I am looking forward to attending the Bay Area Book Festival next year as well! I can't wait to see who is coming to speak at next year's Bay Area Book Festival.

Until my next post, happy reading!!

Sherman Alexie & Daniel Handler (AKA Lemony Snicket) Author Event & Book Signing!

I love attending author events and book signings whenever I can, especially if they are at local independent bookstores or nearby book festivals.

Earlier this year, I was excited to learn that Sherman Alexie was coming to the 2016 Bay Area Book Festival and speaking at an event titled: Telling Stories: Sherman Alexie and Daniel Handler (AKA Lemony Snicket) Take the Stage at the San Francisco Chronicle Stage @ the Freight & Salvage in downtown Berkeley, California from 3:15pm to 4:30pm.

Daniel Handler (left) and Sherman Alexie (right)

I have become a H-U-G-E fan of Sherman Alexie's writing in recent years. So, I just knew that I had to see him speak live at the 2016 Bay Area Book Festival. For me, hearing Sherman Alexie speak live before an audience could be a potentially a once in a lifetime opportunity! And believe me, I am beyond thrilled that I attended the Telling Stories: Sherman Alexie and Daniel Handler (AKA Lemony Snicket) Take the Stage event because both Daniel Handler and Sherman Alexie are fabulous to hear speak live. Both men are hilarious and engaging speakers. In this case, it was more of Daniel Handler interviewing Sherman Alexie, but both men are funny and had fabulous things to share during the 75 minutes they spoke.

Plus, having Sherman Alexie sign three different copies of his books that I own and brought with me to this event was just too awesome to pass up. However, in my excitement, I forgot to have a picture of me taken with Sherman Alexie though when I had him sign my copies of his books!!

I also enjoyed having Daniel Handler sign a copy of the first Lemony Snicket novel he wrote titled The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events). Mr. Handler was very nice to meet in person and very chatty, which is wonderful as I love it when authors take the time to talk to readers that come to see them. Anyway, I am currently reading The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events) now and hope to finish reading and then reviewing it later this month.

Until my next post, happy reading!!

2016 Bay Area Book Festival

Yes, I made it to the 2nd annual Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley, California!!

was held this past weekend, June 4th and 5th,
 in downtown Berkeley, California.
This year, the 2016 Bay Area Book Festival
was filled with several authors & speakers,
exhibitors, and performers, + family
activities, food and drink, and much more!

There was so much to see and do
during the 2016 Bay Area Book Festival that
it was difficult to see it all in the two days
this book festival took place.

I was only able to attend the
2016 Bay Area Book on Sunday, June 5th.
So, I decided to focus most of time there
attending author/speaker events and signings
this year and skip focusing on the exhibits
as I'd visited the 2015 Bay Area Book Festival
and seen many of the exhibitors then.

I attended two author/speaking events on
Sunday, June 5, 2016 that were each 75 minutes
in length and were followed by author signings. The
two events I attended were titled:

From Bodice Rippers to Trailblazers: Feminism through Romance @ the Shattuck Hotel Plaza

with an author panel, which included
Aya de Leon, Gail Carriger, Alice Gaines, Kristin Miller, and moderator, Beth Barany.

I enjoyed listening to all five women speak

about their writing/works and
hearing their thoughts about feminism as it
pertains to romance novels.

Telling Stories: Sherman Alexie and Daniel Handler (AKA Lemony Snicket) Take the Stage @ San Francisco Chronicle Stage @ the Freight & Salvage

I have become a H-U-G-E fan of Sherman Alexie's
writing in recent years.
So, I just knew that I had to see him speak live at the
2016 Bay Area Book Festival. For me, hearing
Sherman Alexie speak live before an audience
could be a potentially a once in a lifetime opportunity for me!
Plus, having Sherman Alexie
sign copies of his books that I had
brought with me was awesome too.

Both Daniel Handler and Sherman Alexie

were fabulous to hear speak live.
Both men are hilarious and engaging speakers.

Additionally, I briefly visited the Lacuna at
the 2016 Bay Area Book Festival, which is
and art installation containing used books given
away free to the public during the 2016 Bay Area Book Festival.
The Lacuna was pretty picked over by the time
I arrived there on Sunday afternoon, so I
didn't take any free books home with me.

Book Festivals For Literary Lovers Across the USA

After attending the phenomenal Bay Area Book Festival earlier this year, I decided to check out which other literary festivals around the United States would be worthy of a visit.

To my surprise, I discovered an article on Bustle's website titled 10 Book Festivals For Literary-Lovers Across The United States by Stephanie Topacio Long... And to my delight, the Bay Area Book Festival made the list of 10 book festivals for literary lovers across the USA!! I also discovered 9 other book festival that I would love to attend as well, especially the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.

Have you been to any book festivals here in the United States? If so, share your experience! As I mentioned above, I attended the Bay Area Book Festival in June of this year. I blogged about my experience at this book festival. Click on the following link to read about my visit to the 2015 Bay Area Book Festival.

Until my next post, happy reading!!

2015 Bay Area Book Festival

Last weekend was the inaugural Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley, California. My husband and I only attended part of the festivities at the Bay Area Book Festival last weekend.... What we did see and do while we were there was awesome! I am so grateful that we went to this fabulous literary event.

Several streets were blocked off to cars in Berkeley during the Bay Area Book Festival and streets were lined with different booths. Some booths were filled with various book publishers, bookstores selling books, writer's groups, authors signing their books, food vendors, and so on.

Plus, there were lots of free indoor and outdoor author speaking events for children, teens, and adults, which made for an awesome weekend of literary fun for people of all ages.

I also enjoyed that the Bay Area Book Festival was conveniently  located in downtown Berkeley, so we were able to ride BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) into Berkeley verses driving and dealing with the hassle of finding parking during this busy two day event.
Outdoor areas for families with children to sit and hangout.

Some of my favorite highlights of our time spent at the Bay Area Book Festival are as follow:

1. The Lacuna Project --- 50,000 FREE used books were given away to the public during the Bay Area Book Festival. What a fabulous idea to create an outdoor art installation that doubles as an outdoor library!?!? I thought the Lacuna was absolutely fabulous and loved that it connected the public at large with books to take home and read!

I happened to take home four free used books during our visit to the Lacuna. Because we came to the Bay Area Book Festival on BART, there were only so many books I could hand carry around the book festival with me during the day and then carry back home with us, which is probably a good thing as I already have more books to read than I can possibly read in a lifetime.

2. Attending the Judy Blume event at the Berkeley Community Center on Saturday, June 6th. Click on link to read my experience about hearing/seeing Judy Blume speak. It was a wonderful and lively event that I am so glad that we didn't miss out on as I now have a sign copy of Ms. Blume's new novel for adults titled, In The Unlikely Event.

3. My husband and I also attended the Science of Booze, a free lecture, featuring authors Amy Stewart (The Drunken Botanist) and Adam Rogers (Proof). After the lecture Amy Stewart signed a copy of The Drunken Botanist for me.

The irony here is that my husband and I do not drink booze at all. I am, however, a huge fan of Amy Stewart's writing. I've read Amy Stewart's nonfiction books, Wicked Plants and Wicked Bugs, and found them both to be fabulous. So, now of course, I look forward to reading The Drunken Botanist

As a side note, I'd made a post earlier this year listing the ten authors I'd like to meet in person at a literary/books signing event and Amy Stewart was one of the authors I wanted to meet!!

Me (left) with author, Amy Stewart, at the Bay Area Book Festival!!
I missed many of the free lectures during our time spent at the Bay Area Book Festival... It was too beautiful of a day to spend most of our time indoors during our few hours at the Bay Area on Sunday, June 7th. Next year, my husband and l have to plan better and spend both full days at the Bay Area Book Festival.

Until my next post, happy reading!!

Bay Area Book Festival!!

Woot, woot, exciting news for all of you literary folks!! The Bay Area Book Festival is happening this upcoming weekend in Berkeley, California on Saturday, June 6 & Sunday, June 7, 2015!! I am attending this event with my hubby this weekend and am looking forward to attending the festivities both days.

I came across an article titled Experience the Bay Area Book Festival on the SF Gate website. In the article, I learned the following information about the Bay Area Book Festival:
The inaugural Bay Area Book Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, in downtown Berkeley. Admission to the festival is free.
The event takes place both indoors and outdoors, with a large Children’s Arena & Stage and a Teen Stage with author presentations and performances outdoors, while author keynotes, interviews and panels also take place in indoor auditoriums.
The locations of these indoor sessions are marked in the peach areas on the festival map. To manage crowds, all indoor author sessions are ticketed, though tickets are available for free. Here is how to obtain tickets:
Highly recommended: Get your tickets in advance because many sessions will fill up! Go to our sortable schedule page at www.baybookfest.org,and reserve via the Eventbrite link next to the session you would like attend.
