Unfinished Reads

Okay, let's discuss the topic of unfinished reads!

I am the type of person who usually doesn't stick to reading a single book at a time. I usually have an audiobook, an eBook, or physical book that I am reading at any given time and the book may be fiction or nonfiction depending on my interest at the moment. Most of the time, I finish reading a book in a timely manner. If the book isn't something that I am enjoying, then most of the time I won't finish reading it and move along to another book.

At the moment, I currently have six books that I began reading at some point or another earlier this year, but have yet to finish reading the books this year for one reason or another. I have every intention of finishing these books, as I am still interested in reading them... But somehow, I lost the reading momentum for each of these books and moved on to read other books.

Honestly, I don't like having so many unfinished reads by the end of the calendar year!! One or two books that I haven't finished reading would be acceptable to me, especially if I'd started reading them at the end of the year. But having six unfinished reads is kind of daunting. I like to start fresh in the new year with a clean slate and begin reading all new books.

I feel confident that I can finish reading one of the six books by the end of the year, which is a good thing. But, I do have the following conundrum though... At the start of the new year, do I begin reading a new book that I am interested at the moment or do I try and finish reading the books I have yet to finish this year?

How about you? Do you have books that you have yet to finish reading this year? Do you end up reading more than one book at a time? What are your reading habits like?

  1. I can't read more than one book at a time. I've tried in the past and ended up DNF-ing one of the books. Still haven't picked it up. After this one experience, I decided to always finish the book I'm currently reading, before moving on to the next one.
Also, I hate DNF-ing books in general, so even if the book is boring I will try my best to finish it, which is the reason why I have only 3 books on my gave-up-on shelf on Goodreads.

    1. I think I'll be trying to only read 1 or 2 books at a time in 2016 as well. It's too easy to lose focus/momentum on a book and not pick it up again after one stops reading it. Plus, there's always the chance that I'll forget some of the plot details and not want to start reading the novel all over again.

  2. Aye, I feel you! This was me too this year. I had about five unfinished reads, three I was able to finish months later. I am determined to read the last two by the end of the year. I really want to start fresh for the new year and give myself a smaller reading goal for 2016 so I don't feel as pressured or guilty.

I guess I recommend whatever feels right to you. You can start fresh for the new year, and who knows...you might pick up the unfinished reads later on in 2016.

    1. I will definitely be changing my reading goals for 2016. I am kind of on a reading burn out as this year as well as last year, I read a total of 100 book.

I want to focus on simply savoring each book I read (not that I don't enjoy reading for the sake of reading) in 2016. I will focus less on trying to read 100 books or more in a year. 2016 has to be less about how many books I read in a year. I want to enjoy more of what I read and for the sake of the simple joy and pleasure of reading books themselves. It can't be about the numbers anymore as I read too many books this year that I didn't like.

I also want to only read one or two books at a time so that I can really get into the book itself and finish reading before the end of the year.

  3. For me, it's not so much that I didn't finish the book, it's that I don't have the energy to review it! I really hate not finishing books and not knowing the ending so I'll normally finish a book at all costs. However, if it was a really tiresome book to read and I really just don't know what to say or I don't really have the energy to write a review, then it sits on my currently reading shelf on Goodreads. Which piles up. But I know I'll get it all cleaned up by the end of the year!

    1. Sometimes I finish books I don't particularly like as well for a number of reasons... Like everyone else has loved the book and I am trying to figure out what the appeal of it is or I'm simply to stubborn to put it down and just quit reading the book... But lately, I've been beginning to feel like why waste my time reading books I don't like.

I agree with you that sometimes it does take a lot of energy to review books, especially when you have a lot of things going or don't know what to say about the book. It really depends on the circumstances for me.

Happy reading to you in 2016!!

  4. I have two unfinished audiobooks and two unfinished books right now. I'm slowly progressing. I hope to at least finish 3 of the 4 before the year is up. One audiobook will have to be finished next year. I find that I either fly through something, or I get twitchy while reading and want to switch genres partway through my book. So all my books are different genres right now.
