Not Reading Could Undermine Democracy!!

I watched this YouTube video earlier this week from BBC Politics and BBC News. I found the topic interesting on why reading is important to democracy. Not only does reading books (both fiction and nonfiction) help with empathy, but many other things like critical thinking.

Watch the above video to learn more from the panel of speakers.

  1. I think those in power would certainly prefer us NOT to read!

  2. I'm at work so I can't watch the video, but yes....democracy, at least in the US, was predicated on a reading, thinking public. That's why the freedom of speech is so strongly protected, and why the post office used to be subsidized (in order to promote newspapers). I'd agree that novels can impart empathy, but there's also the fact that the reading, thinking brain is very different from the passive televised/tiktok brain.

    1. I agree with you in that the reading/thinking mind is very different from the one that is passive from watching television, etc.

  4. Thanks for that though I don't need a YT video for that, it's totally clear to me that most of those who elect idiots don't read. That's why a certain person loves the uneducated.
