Top Ten Tuesday - Books About/Set In Places on My Bucket List

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Top Ten Tuesday was originally created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Below are ten works of fiction I would like to read that are set in places on my travel bucket list. The books are not listed in any order of importance.

1. Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd (England)
2. Manila Noir by Jessica Hagedorn, et al (Philippines)
3. The Source by James A. Michener (the Holy Land)
4. The Man from St. Petersburg by Ken Follett (Russia)
5. The Last Train to Key West by Chanel Cleeton (Key West, Florida)
6. Santa Fe Mourning by Amanda Allen (Santa Fe, New Mexico)
7. When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton (Cuba)
8. Alaska by James A. Michener
9. The Last Letter from Sicily by Lindsay Marie Morris (Sicily, Italy)
10. Russka by Edward Rutherfurd (Russia)

Have you read any of the above novels? Which novel should I read first?

  1. I remember reading The Source way back when and loving it, I think it's worth a reread too, thanks for the reminder. The Last Train to Key West, I thought was great as well, based on a real storm in Florida.

  2. Cuba seems like a lovely place to visit. I read Alaska years ago and really liked it, so my vote is to start there.

  4. Michener and Rutherfurd are a real challenge for today's attention spans. It's so nice to see someone wanting to read them--excellent! I've only read the Chanel Cleeton tho I've read other Micheners, Lisa of Hopewell https://hopewellslibraryoflife.wordpress.com/2026/04/07/top-ten-tuesday-books-about-set-in-places-on-my-bucket-list-submitted-by-rachel-sunny-side/

  5. I haven't read any of these novels, but, based strictly on the settings, I would read the book from Santa Fe, New Mexico first.

  6. I read Sarum in the mid-90s before taking my first trip to England. It's a long novel, but it was so great to visit some of the places I read about (Bath, Salisbury Cathedral, etc.). My husband has read several more books by Rutherfurd, but this is the only one that I've read.

    1. It appears that both Sarum and Russka are really long novels!! I am sure I'll enjoy both books as they both seem to be popular with readers.

    2. Yes, Sarum is VERY long. I read it while taking a few classes at UNL (for fun). Given that I had a lot of other reading to do, it took me 6 months to read Sarum.

    3. I use to read very long books in my teens and twenties, but now I tend to read short books... Books that are 400 pages or less. I've wanted to read Russka, Sarum, Anna Karenina, War and Peace, and several other longer reads, but keep putting them off for shorter reads.

  7. I've also got Russka on my list but I wouldn't mind visiting any of the places Edward Rutherfurd describes (again, in many cases).
