I accidentally discovered the above video on YouTube. As an avid reader, the title of the video is what captured my attention straight away.
Apparently, neurotypical brains do not have the innate ability to read. From an evolutionary stand point, our brains haven't had enough time to develop a 'dedicated' reading brain according to what I learned from watching this video.
To learn more, watch the above video. It's fairly short at nearly six minutes.
Indeed. We're 'wired' for language acquisition... but not for reading. You might find 'Proust and The Squid – The Story and Science of the Reading Brain' by Maryanne Wolf of interest.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read anything by Proust before. I will add 'Proust and The Squid – The Story and Science of the Reading Brain' to my reading wishlist.
DeleteWell, I noticed how hard it is for someone to learn to read when teaching my Kurdish student. She is 57 and never went to school, has never read anything. It's so hard for her. No comparison to when my children learned to read.
ReplyDeleteIt must be very rough for older adults when it comes to learning to read.
DeleteVery rough indeed. My student has so many problems.
